Many patients who do not want to wear mobile dentures asked us if they can have fixed teeth on implants in a short time. This article intends to respond to the needs of those who are following us and have asked the same question.
We have always been impressed by the astonishment of our patients who did not expect to have fully rehabilitated teeth in just in a few days (or, where the “immediate dental implants post extraction” technique could be applied, on the very same day), especially where there were few teeth to be extracted.
In our opinion, their astonishment comes from a series of prejudices on implantology.
Below, we will try to debunk the most common ones:
-
It is a long and painful intervention. FALSE! On average, in order to place the number of implants required for a fixed denture (from 4 to 6, depending on the arches, whether maxillary or mandibular), it takes about one hour from anaesthesia to the moment we take the impression and make the control x-rays. Pain is almost non-existent, which is why most patients ask us to rehabilitate both their arches the same day.
-
Should implants be left to heal in the bone before being used? FALSE! This misconception arose from the fact that, at their origin, about 50 years ago, physical and mechanical characteristics of implants did not allow their immediate use, but required a healing period of 6 months before they could be used. Over the years, clinicians and researchers have conducted studies to reduce the healing periods in which implants could not be used. Approximately 15 years ago, due to innovations in implants and surgical techniques, demonstrations were made that implants, if placed with a certain force into the bone (the so-called tightening torque, which should be over 45 N/cm), have the same survival rates as implants that are left to heal in the bone without being used for longer or shorter periods of time.
-
Making the denture takes a long time! FALSE! The physical completion of a temporary denture, which is placed after the intervention and left in place for about 6 months, takes half a day. The main problem, especially in vacations or with many patients coming from abroad, is coordination with dental technicians, often involving losing a few days, despite everyone’s commitment.
-
It is not possible to place implants if the roots have not yet been extracted. FALSE! We have already published an article on this matter.
-
Before using the implants I have to wait a few days for the diagnostic phase. FALSE! Due to the Vatech-Pax- i3D Green diagnosis imaging system existing in our clinic, we can, immediately after the intervention, make a 3D CT scan to assess the correct implant placement and, immediately after, implants can be used with no problems.
